Wednesday 8/31 @ Upham Woods
Fundamentals of Experiential Learning 8:30am-11:30am
- Making Better Observations- participate in an observation routine that is effective for any curriculum and aids learners in a variety of subject areas
- Mental Heuristics and Risk Management- review best practices and challenges when managing risk and making decisions for youth and adult programs anywhere
Upham Programs 1pm-4pm:
Be trained to facilitate the following programs with your groups at Upham Woods:
- Wacky Water Critters (fresh water ecology and Macro invertebrate collection)- become eligible to lead with your group at Upham Woods
- Archery- become familiar with 4-H archery practices and site specific procedures at Upham Woods- work with a certified 4-H archery instructor and be eligible to lead archery with your group at Upham Woods
Thursday 9/1 @ Upham Woods
Canoe Training: 1:30pm-4:30pm
- Learn canoe safety and paddle techniques
- Familiarize yourself with paddle programming at Upham Woods
- Hike north shore trail
- Learn about a creative way for youth to introduce themselves to each other with an activity called “Auto Cartography”
Friday, 9/2 @ Upham Woods
STEM and Environmental Education Training: 9:15am-11:45am, 12:45pm-4:30 on Blackhawk Island
- Value of a Tree Curriculum (forestry) (in the morning)
- Learn about the new forestry curriculum at Upham Woods with an emphasis on Biofuel technology and hands on experience with forestry tools
- Become eligible to participate in Value of a Tree resource lending program
- Digital Observation Technology Skills (DOTS) training (Must attend full day)
- Learn about the latest environmental education research that suggests ways to engage youth in the outdoors
- Become eligible to facilitate DOTS programs with your youth and participate in the DOTS kit lending program
- Participate in a DOTS inquiry on Blackhawk Island
Blackhawk Island Training: 12:45pm-4:30pm
- Become eligible to lead hikes on Blackhawk Island with your group
- Participate in technology programming on the island
- Learn new forestry curriculum including new ways of seeing the forest ecosystem: picture posts and deer exclosures
Wednesday, 9/14
North Central Region 4-H meeting- Langlade County
Environmental Education: Expanding Our Senses with Digital Tools (Regional Staff only) – Justin Hougham, Marc Nutter, Max Myers
Saturday, 9/17 @ Upham Woods
Team Building and Low Ropes facilitation (Peanut Butter Mountain) (requires a minimum of 6 participants, maximum of 12) 10am-4pm:
- Become trained in fundamentals of team building facilitation and site specific training at Upham Woods
- Participants will be eligible to lead activities on Peanut Butter Mountain at Upham Woods for one year
Stay the night and attend the Upham Woods 75th Anniversary on Sunday 9/18, be a volunteer and help Upham Woods or purchase a ticket $7 and attend the celebration as a welcomed guest. Go here for details on the 75th anniversary celebration.
