School Gardens

IMG_2416School Gardens provide a hands-on educational opportunity to school children. Not only do kids learn where their food comes from, but become engaged in the process of growing food. Kids who garden are more likely to try and enjoy new vegetables, in addition to becoming better stewards of the environment.

Many schools across Rock County have installed school gardens over the past several years. Some schools are able to incorporate the produce into school lunches, while others offer the vegetables for children to take home and share with family. After school programs and parental involvement are encouraged, which builds community cohesion and healthier habits.

Currently, there are school gardens in:

  • Edgerton Community Elementary School in Edgerton
  • Madison Elementary School in Janesville
  • Jackson Elementary School in Janesville
  • Merrill Elementary School in Beloit
