Northern Forest Digital Herbarium

Acer-rubrumThe Northern Forest Digital Herbarium (https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/herbarium/) is a powerful on-line resource developed by Kathleen Morgen-UW Extension Environmental Education Specialist and Karen Danielson-Biologist with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission.

No need to sacrifice living plants to a plant press. The Digital Herbarium offers life-like digital images of real northern Wisconsin plants, plus information such as:

  • The plant’s common name in Ojibwe and English
  • The plant’s scientific name in Latin
  • Habitat conditions and locations where it is found
  • Traditional Ojibwe uses for the plant

Digital Herbarium images are public domain and meant to be shared as a learning tool. You are welcome to copy all images, print them, and encouraged to share them!

The Northern Forest Digital Herbarium is a partnership project between UW-Extension and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission and made possible through a grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board.
