2018 State 4-H Meats Judging Contest Results: Grant County top senior and junior divisions

The team from Grant County took top honors in the senior division of the State 4-H Meats Judging Contest held Feb. 17 at University of Wisconsin Madison Meat Laboratory.

The State 4-H Meats Judging Contest consists of evaluating and ranking classes of hams, beef, pork and lamb carcasses, and two retail cut classes. Contestants also identified 30 retail cuts of beef, pork or lamb and 10 cuts of processed meats products, quality and yield graded 5 beef carcasses and completed a 10 question meat label reading exercise.  Seniors had to give one set of oral reasons on a ranking class.

Team members were: Cora Kleist, Blake Wegmuller, Abby Meier and Kendra Jentz. The team was coached by Dennis Patterson. These 4-H members will represent Wisconsin at either the National 4-H Meats Judging Contest to be held this fall in Kansas City, MO or the National Western held in January 2019 in Denver, CO.

The second place senior team, was from Ozaukee County. Team members included James Mejchar, Jessica Mejchar, Sarah Riemer and Josh Riemer, Tim Reimer and Ashley Strong. The team was coached by Teri Mejchar.

New awards were given this year for the top individual in retail identification and carcass evaluation: Top individual in retail identification went to Zach Mickelson, Columbia County. Zach also earned the top award in carcass evaluation and oral reasons.

The top ten senior individual’s judges, in order, were: Zach Mickelson, Columbia, Cora Kleist, Grant, Blake Wegmuller, Grant, Abby Meier, Grant, James Mejchar, Ozaukee, Kendra Jentz, Grant, Danielle Chwala, Jefferson, Morgan Vondra, Iowa, Jessica Mejchar, Ozaukee, Tony Diedrich, Outagamie.

The top junior team was from Grant County. Team members were: Jessica Patterson, Libby Vogt, Avery Crooks, Alayna Barth, Luke Patterson, Leah Patterson, Bailey Grissom and Cameron Patterson. The team is coached by Dennis Patterson. The second place junior team was from Columbia County.  Team members were: Samantha Rake, Summer Rake, Macy Cross and Faith Baerwolf.  The team is coached by Todd Taylor.

New awards were given this year for the top individual in retail identification and carcass evaluation: Top Junior in Retail Identification went to Jessica Patterson, and top individual in carcass evaluation went to Samantha Rake, Columbia County.

The contest is organized annually by Extension Meats Specialist, Jeff Sindelar, Extension Youth Livestock Specialist, Bernie O’Rourke, Extension Outreach Specialist, Alissa Grenawalt and 4-H Youth Development Specialist Pam Hobson.
