Establishing a foundation for a successful first-lactation is a key component of a dairy farm’s financial success. This foundation starts on day one with the birth of the calf and continues through until freshening. Emphasizing calf and heifer management will help the first-lactation heifer become a better cow.

The University of Wisconsin-Extension Dairy Team will host a “Better Heifers, Better Cows” Dairy Heifer Meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, at Liberty Hall, Kimberly.

Featured presenters will focus on various aspects of calf and heifer management, which can influence the success of her lactation.

Presenters and topics include:
— UW-Extension milk quality specialist Pamela Ruegg, DVM on Using PCR Tests to Diagnose Mastitis and Calving Healthy Heifers-How to Maximize Udder Health
— UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science Post-Doctoral Researcher Sonia Gelsinger, Ph.D. on Neonatal Calf Nutrition Implications for Long-Term Performance
— UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science Adjunct/Affiliate Member and VitaPlus Dairy Youngstock Technical Specialist Noah Litherland, Ph.D., on Nutrition and Management  for Transitioning the First Calf Heifer
— UW-Extension dairy agents Sarah Mills-Lloyd and Tina Kohlman on Finding the Balance-Management of Calf Health vs. Cost of Production.

The program is open to any individuals with interest regarding dairy replacement. The fee for the program is $40 per person, which includes materials and lunch. An additional $10 late fee/walk-in fee will be added to the registration fee after Dec. 13. Detailed agenda and registration information can be found on the UW-Extension Dairy Team Calendar at https://fyi.uwex.edu/dairy/events/better-heifers-better-cows-heifer-management-seminar/.
