Known as the Mariner Building, the six-story limestone Art Deco building was completed in 1936 and was used as an office building until the 1990s. The building is part of Historic North Milwaukee Street in the Third Ward District. In 1998, Hotel Metro opened at the site after completing a lengthy $7 million renovation. The renovation brought classic 1930s European Art Moderne-style boutique hotel to the authentic period building. Although all of the amenities are modernized (such as high speed wireless internet and climate control), hand-woven carpets from Tibet, handmade silk shades, bamboo wood flooring and wood paneling from sustainable forests all contribute to the hotel’s authentic retro style.
