Featured Presenter: Dr. Karen Waite
Michigan State University
Dr. Karen Waite is an Extension Horse Specialist at Michigan State University and a teacher and advisor to equine students in the MSU Animal Science Department. In her Extension role, she oversees the Adult and Youth Equine Extension programs and is the Director of Leadership Development for My Horse University. She has been an active contributor to eXtension Horse Quest. As the Program Coordinator for the MSU undergraduate Horse Management Program, she teaches a variety of equine courses and is a faculty advisor for the Horsemen’s Association and MSU Equestrian Team. Dr. Waite also oversees the Michigan 4-H Proud Equestrians Program for riders with disabilities. She has Bachelor’s Degrees in Education and Animal Science, a Master’s Degree in Animal Science with a nutrition emphasis, and a PhD in Sports Psychology with an emphasis on equestrian sport and activity. Dr. Waite is especially interested in youth sportsmanship in equestrian competitions and participants attitudes on show horse welfare.
Dr. Waite is a past President of the American Youth Horse Council and past President of the Michigan Quarter Horse Association. In addition, she is a carded judge with the American Buckskin Registry Association and the Pony of the Americas Club.
Purpose for the workshop:
- To offer educational workshops which include both information and hands on activity ideas for leaders to utilize when teaching youth.
- To provide a forum for strengthening communications relative to the 4-H Horse & Pony project.
- To provide an opportunity for participants to network and share experiences.
Numerous workshop topics pertaining to leadership, project ideas, horse health, etc. will be offered throughout the conference by invited instructors.
Friday night: Get acquainted & share activities; NO formal presentations as in past years.
Saturday: Featured speaker, workshops & district mtgs on campus at UW Oshkosh.
Sunday Morning: Association meeting Sunday Nov 1 @ 9:00 am GCC Badger Rm
