Many view the suburban communities surrounding larger cities as good places to live and raise a family, but hardly as centers of employment. The fact that in 2010 over 80 percent of the employed residents of the Madison area communities of Waunakee, Middleton, Fitchburg, Monona, Verona, and Sun Prairie worked outside the community where they lived seems to reaffirm that perception.
However, almost 47,000 people were employed in these six communities in 2010. Middleton employed the largest share with 16,335 employees. What percentage of the 16,335 people working in Middleton lived outside of Middleton?
According to the U.S. Census, 91 percent of the 16,335 people employed in Middleton in 2010 lived outside of Middleton. The Census also reports that 27 percent (4,426) lived in the City of Madison and 28 percent of those working in Middleton lived outside of Dane County.
