Often overlooked in the scramble to find data, the Statistical Abstract of the United States was one of the best places to start looking for information. From 1878-2012, the Statistical Abstract was the place to go for social, political, and economic statistics on the United States.

In addition to serving as a source of data, the Statistical Abstract included a comprehensive guide to other data sources (Appendix 1).

Although the emphasis in the Statistical Abstract is primarily on national data, many tables present data for regions and individual states and a smaller number for metropolitan areas and cities.
