Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit

The 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit is being held April 21-24 at Gun Lake Pottawatomi’s Jijak Camp, just south of Grand Rapids, MI.  This year’s event will feature:

  • Culinary and Traditional Foods Focus: a menu featuring Indigenous foods prepared by Native chefs
  • Agricultural and Foods Workshops: Thursday and Friday hands-on workshops covering innovative food production, processing, and funding opportunities
  • Intertribal Foods Festival: Saturday is a day-long celebration of Native foods with demonstrations by Native chefs, elder presentations, and family activities
  • Regional Youth Summit: Tribal youth, ages 15-18, will spend Thursday evening-Sunday learning about food and agriculture

Registration is now open.  The early registration discount ends March 15th, and the draft agenda will be presented in a short, interactive webinar at 2:00pm central time on Wednesday, March 9th:

Regional Youth Summit

Held in conjunction with the 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit, the regional Native Youth in Food & Agriculture Summit is open to Tribal youth ages 15-18.  Building upon the success of the Youth Leadership Summit at the University of Arkansas and the Intertribal Ag. Council’s Youth Summit, this inaugural regional youth event offers a tremendous educational and networking opportunity.

  • Cooking with Top Native Chefs: Groups of youth will be paired with chefs to learn basic culinary skills and help prepare and serve a meal during the Intertribal Foods Festival
  • Learning About Traditional Foods: Hands-on learning activities will include maple syrup, wild rice, fish and game, and heirloom seed saving.  Language skills and stories from elders will be a major component
  • Connecting with Other Tribal Youth: Sharing stories and building connections with peers from other communities is another major benefit

Funding Opportunities and Other News

  • Community Food Sovereignty Assessment (Deadline: March 15th): First Nations Development Institute (FDNI) is accepting applications up to $10,000 to conduct food sovereignty assessments.
  • Conservation Stewardship Program (Signup Deadline: March 31st): USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is accepting signups for it’s Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) that compensates landowners for good land management practices. A recording of the NRCS/IAC Tribal webinar is available here.
  • Administration for Native Americans (Deadline: April 6th): Administration for Native American (ANA) grants support a variety of economic development and cultural revitalization efforts with major, multi-year funding awards.
  • Value Added Producer Grant (Deadline: TBD): USDA Rural Development’s Value Added Producer Grant (VAPG) supports development of feasibility studies and business plans, as well as providing working capital for value added production efforts.  IAC will be hosting a webinar with Rural Development in the near future when the program funding application is announced.
  • Youth Leadership Summit: Native Youth in Ag: The University of Arkansas’s Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative is accepting applications for the Youth Leadership Summit until April 11 for new participants.  Returning student applications are due by March 11.
  • Regional Tribally Supported Agriculture (TSA) getting ready to launch.  The Intertribal Agriculture Council’s Mobile Farmers Market is getting ready to launch this new effort aimed at expanding access to traditional foods while building an expanded intertribal food distribution network.  More information will be available in the next couple weeks.
