The entire dairy sheep research flock at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Spooner Agricultural Research Station will be sold through an online computer auction on Thursday, October 13, 2016 beginning at 5:00 p.m. Central Time. The auction will be conducted by Equity Cooperative Livestock Sales Association of Baraboo, Wisconsin (http://www.equitycoop.com/).
These sheep are of a high percentage dairy breeding (95%+) with various combined percentages of East Friesian and Lacaune breeding. Some ewes also carry a small percentage of Katahdin or Awassi breeding. Approximate numbers of sheep to be sold are:
- 190 mature ewes of 2 years of age and older, exposed to top dairy rams for a month prior to the sale
- 150 ewe lambs born in January-March 2016, sold open
- 10 select ram lambs born in January-March 2016
- 5 select mature rams
Rams and a few top ewes will sell as individuals. Remaining ewes will sell in groups of 5 to 20 individuals. All sheep will have current Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) for milk yield, and mature ewes will have a complete set of production records. Potential buyers can view the sheep at the Spooner Agricultural Research Station, W6646 Hwy 70, Spooner, WI 54801 on Friday afternoon and Saturday day, October 7 and 8, 2016 or at another time with an appointment from Phil Holman, Spooner Superintendent (715-635-3735, email@example.com).
