Nutrition Enhancement Project
The goals of the Wisconsin Nutrition Enhancement Project are to improve food security of school-aged children through school breakfast enhancement, coordination and promotion.
This is a collaborative project with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the University of Wisconsin-Extension (UWEX) which began in 2004. Efforts to improve food security and reduce childhood obesity include development of educational materials, training and technical assistance, program evaluation and enhanced community collaboration as it relates to school breakfast programs.
Research shows that eating breakfast improves children’s dietary quality, and contributes to improved classroom attention and academic achievement. Yet many Wisconsin school age children do not have a chance to eat breakfast at home. The focus of the project is to increase the number of schools in the state that offer school breakfast programs and to increase the number of students participating in the program.
One way to increase both school and student participation in school breakfast programs is by making grants available to schools. Mini-grants enable schools to start a new breakfast program or assist schools with an existing program to implement new ways of serving breakfast to increase student participation in the program.
School Breakfast Mini- Grants Historical Information
In the past, in an effort to increase both school and student participation in school breakfast programs, Nutrition Enhancement grants (school breakfast mini-grants) were made available to schools through a non-competitive grant application process. Schools applied for funding to either start a new program or improve upon an existing program. These mini-grants have been available to schools for the past few years, on a yearly basis with the exception of the 2007-2008 school year. School breakfast mini-grants are administered by the Department of Public Instruction.
The following maps show by county, school districts that received mini grants for each school year listed.
