Tips for designing cattle handling facilities
Dr. Dave Kammel, UW Extension Specialist Biological Systems Engineering
Cattle handling facilities do not have to be expensive to provide a safe and convenient place to work. The basics of animal behavior and how it is used in designing facilities will be presented. Two main design philosophies will be discussed. Bud William’s “Bud Box” and Temple Grandin’s designs have both common animal behavior principles integrated into the design and some unique aspects that producers should understand. Properly designed remodeled facilities can function just as well as packaged systems. People should be safe while handling animals in a safe and low stress way.
Below is a presentation Dr. Kammel gave at the 2011 Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Winter Conference on designing beef cattle handling facilities.
