Safer Chemical Alternatives

SHWEC is part of the OECD Ad HOC Group on the Substitution of Harmful Chemicals that is developing a resource web portal that will contain software tools for replacing  hazardous chemicals being used in the manufacturing sector with safer alternatives. The objective of the  “substitution toolbox” is to capture the range and diversity of alternatives assessment tools and methods to provide useful guidance to alternatives assessment practitioners in their choice and application of tools. Manufacturers are seeking alternatives assessment approaches to comply with regulations but also to respond to industry necessities as well as to consumer demand for safer products.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is headquartered in Paris, France, and its mission is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people worldwide. OECD established the Ad Hoc Group on the Substitution of Harmful Chemicals in 2012, and it is co-chaired by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
