4-H Advanced Space Camp

Hey 4-Hers,

Guess what, your wildest space dreams have come true. There is another Space Camp for High School youth (grades 10-12) this year. This is Monroe County 4-H Agent Joshua Goede and I am offering 16 slots in the 2015 4-H Advanced Space Camp. I know you went in middle school with 4-H and probably had a great time.

This is not your middle school Space Camp. This is a whole week of in depth science, space and engineering. Remember your 1 hour long simulation? Get ready for a 6 hour experience plus all the practice that goes with it. Remember looking into the zero gravity pool? We get to go in this time. Remember all the simulators you didn’t get to use? You’ll get to use more this time around.

So here are the program details:

  • Travel will be Jan. 24-31, 1015
  • There will be a teleconference in Nov. to go over final travel details
  • We will be flying to Huntsville AL
  • There are only 16 spots
  • There will be a male and female chaperone going.
  • Applications need to be in Monroe County by October 15, 2014
  • The cost will be close to $1,100. There is a payment plan.
  • If you have questions please don’t hesitate to email  joshua.goede@ces.uwex.edu or call Joshua at 608-269-8722

Free Opportunity for Adult Volunteers at Upham Woods

Picture1Adult volunteers are invited to a free Outdoor Technology Field day at Upham Woods on September 23rd beginning at 9 am.  In the morning, we will use recently acquired technologies to explore Blackhawk Island, demonstrate the use of Digital Observation Technology Skills (DOTS) kits, and provide for hands on use of these tools.  Using digital microscopes, remote sensors, cameras, thermal imagers and trail cameras, this program will explore hidden environments, such as habitats, nocturnal wildlife movements, microscopic soil features, and the thermodynamics of living organisms.  In the afternoon, we will take a look at programs that use mobile technology tools to enable deep observation and investigation of natural environments, making the ‘invisible’ both visible and accessible to exploration and study.  Finally, we will close the day with a discussion about the needs and best practices for these ideas in your program, school, or organization.

To register please contact Andrea at andrea,braatz@outagamie.org or 920-832-5120

Need Money for a Community Service Project?

MiLLXeRLTDoes your club or association have a great idea for a community service project, but you don’t have the funding to carry it out?  The United Way Fox Cities Youth Board is accepting grant applications for up to $500 for youth led programs.  Applications for the fall cycle are due November 3rd.  There is another grant cycle in the spring with applications due the first Monday of April.  The key to this grant is that the project is planned and implemented by youth, including the application process, with minimal assistance from adults.

Youth Board Grant Application

If your application is deemed complete and timely, your organization will be asked to send a representative to present your grant proposal at a Youth Board meeting.  This will be your opportunity to present additional supportive information on behalf of your organization’s request. Please be prepared to explain your project’s goals and budgetYouth Board members will ask questions at the conclusion of the grant presentation. Fall grant presentations will take place on the 3rd Monday in November; and Spring grant presentations will take place on the 3rd Monday in April.  More information about a specific time will be emailed once to your group once the grant cycle has closed.

Youth Leadership Project Enrollment

This year we are separating the Outagamie County 4-H Youth Leaders Association and the Youth Leadership project for enrollment purposes.  All 4-H members in grades 8-13 are welcome to be a part of the Outagamie County Youth Leaders Association, and this separation of “projects” is for enrollment purposes only to provide the UW Extension with a more accurate list of active Youth Leaders Association members.  If you have a 4-H member who is active in the Outagamie County 4-H Youth Leaders Association they should sign up for both the Youth Leadership project AND the Youth Leaders Association.  While both the leadership project and the Youth Leaders Association clearly go hand in hand, they are being seprated so that individuals may enroll in the youth leadership project without being included on correspondance for the Youth Leaders Association.  Individuals may enroll for the youth leadership project without enrolling in the Youth Leaders Association (although they woudl love to have you!); however, individuals who enroll in the Youth Leaders Association should also enroll in the Youth leadership project.
