Farm women from Monroe, Jackson, La Crosse, Juneau, and Vernon counties and the surrounding area are invited to participate in the 7th annual Heart of the Farm – Women in Agriculture conference to be held in Sparta on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014.
This program provides farm women with the opportunity to network with other farm women and learn about various risk management topics and tools that are pertinent to farming.
The conference begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. and will be held at a new location this year. It will be at Justin Trails Resort, 7452 Kathryn Ave., Sparta.
Topics and presenters include:
— Adapting Your Farming to Climate Change, Dick Wolkowski, emeritus UW-Extension soil scientist. Most scientists agree climate change is occurring. What are the signs and what is science telling us about climate change in Western Wisconsin? How will it impact your crop production practices? Learn about the realities of climate change for Western Wisconsin and how farmers can adapt to maintain profitability.
— Importance of Women in Cooperative Board/Leadership Roles. Anne Reynolds, Faculty Associate and Assistant Director, UW Center for Cooperatives. Cooperatives provide unique opportunities for member/owners to be involved on a number of different levels. This session will provide an update on women’s current participation in cooperative leadership, followed by a discussion on how to get involved with your cooperatives in formal and informal ways.
— Crop Insurance’s Role in Agriculture. Kimberly Hericks, Owner/Agent, and Sandy Wagner, Agent, Crop Ag Insurance Services, LLC. Kim and Sandy will discuss the current products and new products that are available for the 2014 crop year. They will also provide information on the benefits of crop insurance to the operation and why crop reporting with the USDA service centers is so important.
— Kick Start Your Overall Wellness in 2014. Anne Heath, Health Educator, Scenic Bluff Health Center, and Lynsey Thibodeau, B.S. in Health Promotion and Wellness. Anne will provide information on healthy eating for you and your family. Lynsey will discuss fitness basics to help prevent injury and boost your energy.
Heart of the Farm- Women in Agriculture conference series is a UW-Extension program that is committed to addressing the needs of farm women by providing education on farm business topics, connecting them with agricultural resources and creating support networks.
