Madison, Wis.–Karen Bogenschneider, family policy specialist with Cooperative Extension’s Family Living Programs and UW-Madison professor of human development and family studies received the Career Achievement Award for her contributions to the development of evidence-based family policy at the annual meeting of the National Council on Family Relations in Minneapolis, MN.
The Family Life Career Achievement Award is awarded annually to an exemplary family life educator who has made significant contributions to the engagement of the public in the areas of child development and family life and who has shown scientific evidence for the effectiveness of their educational programs.
The award was given by an organization of university faculty from across the nation who work with the Cooperative Extension System to translate research findings on family life into practice by professionals and policy-makers.
Bogenschneider was recognized for her leadership in creating the Family Impact Seminars for state legislators in Wisconsin and 29 other states. Legislators from across the political spectrum have praised her work, citing the reports for contributing to legislative discussions that have resulted in effective public policy.
As director of the Wisconsin Family Impact Seminars, Bogenschneider has conducted 28 seminars for state policymakers on such topics as corrections, early childhood care and education, long-term care, moving families out of poverty, and workforce development. Since 1991, these 28 seminars have attracted more than 2,000 participants.
The seminars have reached almost four-fifths of the current legislature. Policymakers report that the seminars have increased their knowledge of research and changed their attitudes about the practicality of research and the value of a family impact perspective in policymaking.
“Bogenschneider is the premier scholar of family policy in the country. In addition to her seminars, her family policy textbook is the most commonly used textbook in college courses across the country,” said colleague Dave Riley, child development specialist with Family Living Programs and a professor in the UW-Madison Dept. of Human Development and Family Studies.
