The resurgence of interest in preserving food at home–and concern about food safety–are drawing increasing numbers to Family Living Programs’ food preservation classes and resources.

UW-Extension Nutrition Education Program (WNEP) educators go out into the community to teach low-income school age children, parents, adults with disabilities and WIC participants how to make healthy food choices and to stretch their food dollars. Working with public and private-sector partners, nutrition educators play an important role in providing help and education to Wisconsin’s limited-resource families and individuals.

Lessons about choosing and preparing healthier foods and following recommended food safety procedures bring better health for families and individuals–and may lead to less spending on health care since some of the leading causes of death have a strong dietary component. Cooperative Extension nutrition educators are also looking at ways that local farmers’ markets and community gardens can play a role in good nutrition and healthy lifestyles while supporting local economies. Nutrition education can benefit not only learners, but also taxpayers.
