Come Walk With Us at Global Youth Service Day

Global Youth Service Day was established in 1988 and is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of youth who improve their communities through service. It is the largest and longest-running service event in the world, and the only day of service that is dedicated to children and youth. Global Youth Service Day is geared at addressing critical issues including health, education, environment, hunger, poverty, disaster preparedness and response, and human rights.

This year, Grant County 4-H members will participate. We will be holding a “walk” to raise awareness for local hunger and homelessness in our local area and all funds raised will go to the Grant County Homeless Task Force. Youth in 4-H work hard to make our community a better place and we would like to make this event known to others in the community. We are asking 4-H members to take part in this event in the hope that we can continue to make a difference in our community!  COME WALK WITH US MAY 5 — 1:00-5:00 PM

The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, from 1-5 pm, with registration starting at 12:30 pm, at the Lancaster High School Track Field with the rain location at the Grant County Youth and Ag Building. 4-H youth, parents, club leaders, and community members are all invited to attend and participate in the walk. We will also be holding a bake sale with additional donations going to the Homeless Task Force. If your club  is interested in donating baked goods for the sale or water, Gatorade, granola bars, pretzels, etc. for participating walkers, please contact Betsy Olson, 4-H Youth Agent or Heather Haas, AmeriCorps Volunteer at 608.723.2125. We would appreciate any support your club can offer.  Thanks for your contribution in making this event a success!

Volunteer of the Month

Elizabeth, a volunteer with the Blockhouse Builders, is being recognized as the May Volunteer of the Month. Elizabeth has been a 4-H volunteer leader for 33 years and a volunteer with the Blockhouse Builders for the past 15 years. She said 4-H was a big part of her family when she was growing up. “I was a 4-Her for 11 years and also a junior leader for 5 of those years,” Elizabeth said. 4-H Family Project Day, the clothing project, and serving as the Grant County Coordinator for Japanese LABO Program- language exchange program, are only a couple of the activities and programs that Elizabeth helps out with. “4-H is so much fun, it is educational, and there are so many projects kids can get involved with,” Elizabeth said. “The more people get involved, they realize how great 4-H is; there are opportunities for travel and scholarships for youth that go to college.” Elizabeth also said that for her it is rewarding to see the kids learn and grow over the years, and have the opportunity to teach them about new projects. She mentioned how fun it is teaching kids how to collect insects. Elizabeth noted that her grandson enjoys the entomology project and she enjoys seeing his insect collection get bigger over the years. Congratulations Elizabeth and thank you for all your hard work!

Volunteer of the Month

Brenda, a volunteer with the Beetown Busy Braves, is being recognized as the April Volunteer of the Month. Brenda and her husband Brian have recently taken over as the club leaders. Keri served as the club leader for 8 years and has since stepped down now that her kids have all gone through 4-H. Brenda said she and her husband were contacted last year and found out that the Beetown Busy Braves was going to need a new club leader. The couple made the decision to step up in order to keep the club going. “We didn’t want to see it end, and our daughter Brianna, a member of the club, encouraged us,” Brenda said. “It’s for the 4-Hers, so we decided to take it over.” Brenda said she enjoys seeing all the kids and the projects that they make. “My favorite project to watch is dogs,” Brenda said. “I love watching the event and I am amazed at how hard the youth work; it looks like so much fun.” Brenda also stated that she used to think that 4-H was for farm kids and not for kids that live in town, but she soon discovered that is not the case. “There are so many opportunities and fun things for the kids to do,” Brenda said. “We’re still new to it all, but we’re going to have fun!” Congratulations Brenda and thank you for all your hard work!

The April 4-Her of the Month is Dillin of Blakes Prairie Bombers. Dillin is being recognized for his hard work and commitment in the beef project. Dillin said his favorite part about the beef project is working with the cattle and getting them ready. When asked what he enjoyed most about 4-H, Dillin said, “I like hanging out with other people in 4-H, working with cattle and showing them, and also meeting new people at the fair.” Dillin is in 6th grade and is the son of Tony and Janell.
