RE: Market Lamb and Market Goat Weigh-in Information
NOTE: FFA Advisors please forward this information to interested students.
All market lambs and market goats for the 2012 County Fair will be weighed in at the Fairgrounds on Monday, April 23, 2012 between 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
There is no maximum weight limit for lambs or goats at the initial weigh-in. Enclosed you will find an entry form that must be completed and presented at the time of initial weigh-in. A maximum of five lambs and five goats can be weighed-in per exhibitor, however only one goat and two lambs (one market ewe and one market wether) can be exhibited in the Market Show.
All livestock animals will be double-tagged at weigh-in. If an animal loses one tag, the MLC needs to be contacted to re-tag the animal. If an animal loses both tags, the animal will be disqualified from the competition. If the animal already has a scrapie tag, it can be used as a secondary ID.
Market lambs must weigh a minimum of 100 pounds (no maximum) at the time of final weigh-in to qualify for the Market Sale. Market goats must weigh a minimum of 70 pounds (no maximum) to sell at the time of final weigh-in to qualify for the Market Sale.
Be sure to obtain a receipt of sale for any lambs/goats that you purchase. The receipt must indicate the date of sale, the seller’s name, and any attainable identification information about the goat/lamb(s).
Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.
HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
1) Castrated males being brought to the fair DO NOT need to be scrapie identified.
2) Any female or ram being brought to the fair DOES have to be scrapie identified. This includes any ewe shown in the market classes.
3) If you purchase a female or ram from a flock that is already scrapie identified (ear tag or tattoo), you DO NOT have to re-identify the animal even if it is moved to your farm. However, a record of sale must be maintained.
Forms to Fill in:
- Entry Form (bring to weigh in), one per family
- COOL form from seller (Yellow Sheet – keep in your own records for 2 years)
- COOL form from exhibitor (Green Sheet); one sheet for every exhibitor.

Re: 2012 Market Hog Weigh-in
The 2012 Fond du Lac County Fair Market Hog Show initial weigh-in will be held Monday, April 9th. Project members may weigh in up to five feeder pigs (i.e. a family with 3 exhibitors may weigh-in 15 pigs).
All pigs will be weighed at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Pigs will be weighed individually with a digital scale. Sanitary precautions will be followed to limit the risk of spreading disease. Please bring your own garbage can for your pigs. All pigs must be weighed during the designated time period.
BEFORE coming to the weigh-in, NEATLY complete the top portion of the enclosed identification form(s). Multiple names may be put on a group of pigs if all individuals are within the same family (parent, son, daughter).
All livestock animals will be double-tagged at weigh-in. One tag will be the RFID tag and the other tag will be an additional tamper-proof matching tag. If an animal loses one tag, the MLC needs to be contacted to re-tag the animal. If an animal loses both tags, the animal will be disqualified from the competition. Ear-notching is optional but will not be used as form of ID by the MLC.
There will be both market barrow AND market gilt classes exhibited. Exhibitors may show both a market barrow and market gilt, but only one animal can be sold at the market livestock auction.
Maximium allowable initial weigh-in weight will be 85 pounds. However, market swine must weigh a minimum of 230 pounds at final weigh-in to be eligible for the market livestock sale and rate-of-gain contest. Animals weighing over 300 lbs. at fair time will remain eligible for both the market sale and for rate of gain considerations, however, final weight and sale price will be figured to a maximum of 300 pounds regardless of the actual weight of the animal.
Open show exhibitors are encouraged to weigh in market barrows if they wish to compete in the rate-of-gain contest and carcass show.
When purchasing pigs for exhibition, you must obtain a signed and dated receipt of purchase from the seller. The receipt must include any identification information that is available (for example, birth date, ear notch, premise id number, etc.). MUST BRING RECEIPT TO WEIGH-IN. If needed at a later date, the burden of ownership proof will be on the exhibitor and will include an original receipt of purchase.
Forms to Fill in:
- Entry Form (bring to weigh in), one per family
- COOL form from seller (Yellow Sheet – keep in your own records for 2 years)
- COOL form from exhibitor (Green Sheet); one sheet for each exhibitor.
Wisconsin State Fair: Exhibitors wishing to exhibit junior market barrows at the 2012 State Fair will need to self‐identify their animals with an official RFID identification tag and submit a DNA hair sample ($15) between April 1st and May 10th. www.wistatefair.com .

The Why Ag Initiative is a groundbreaking statewide initiative that will be launched Feb. 22-24, 2012 at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison, WI. The goal of this new program, initially funded through the Workforce Investment Act and the Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin, is to connect students and non-agricultural workers with the emerging job opportunities in Wisconsin’s $59 billion agriculture, food and natural resources industry.
“Why Ag serves as a springboard for employment opportunities in agriculture throughout the state,” says Paul Larson, teacher and member of the Wisconsin Agricultural Education and Workforce Development Council (WAEWDC).
“Agriculture is one of the few industries that continues to present new job opportunities in several of its sectors,” he says. “A rising global population will magnify the demand for food, fiber and fuel which means that the scope of agricultural jobs will continue to grow.”
“The jobs available in agriculture today vary significantly from agricultural jobs of the past,” Larson says. “There are diverse opportunities currently available in the field; Why Ag demonstrates these prospects by illustrating the variety of positions and tasks offered in the agricultural workforce.” The WAEWDC group illustrates the diversity of agricultural jobs from engineering to biosecurity and communications to natural resource management at www.WhyAg.com (see Links on this page).
As the core portal of the Why Ag initiative, the interactive website connects students, displaced workers and those looking for increased employment opportunities with educational and employment advice. The tools demonstrate that many skillsets are transferrable between non-agriculture and agriculturally- focused jobs.
“The primary component of the website allows interested persons the chance to discover an agricultural job that is right for them based on their existing expertise and interests,” says Jack Ourada, executive director of WAEWDC. “The Skills-to-Jobs Matrix matches individual skills to position descriptions from the fields of agriculture, biotechnology and life sciences so website visitors can explore new career opportunities.”
For more information on the Why Ag Initiative, visit www.WhyAg.com or contact Ourada at 608-235-7148 or jack.ourada@wisconsin.gov.
The Wisconsin Agricultural Education and Workforce Development Council was created by Wisconsin Act 223. The group works to grow Wisconsin’s ability to compete by creating a stronger and sustainable workforce for the agriculture, food and natural resources industry. WAEWDC recommends policies and initiatives, encourages youth to pursue related careers, facilitates public and private partnerships, recruits qualified workers and offers professional development throughout the state of Wisconsin.

4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl and State 4-H Skillathon Contests
Scheduled for March 3, 2012
The 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl and State 4-H Skillathon contests will be held together on Saturday March 3, 2012 at UW Madison Animal Sciences Building, Madison, WI. Deadline for registration is Friday, Feb 24, 2012. The cost is $6 per youth. Registration starts at 9 a.m., competitions start at 9:30 a.m. Teams are encouraged to participate in both contests as they will be occurring at the same time. Senior teams will start with the Skillathon contest. Junior and Mixed teams will complete the Skillathon Contest as soon as their team is finished with Quiz Bowl and the Seniors have complete the Skillathon Contest. The planning committee reserves the right to alter schedule if needed.
The teams are divided into three age divisions and teams can consist of 3 or 4 members. The junior division are youth who are under 14 years of age as of Jan.1, 2012. The senior division are youth who are all 14 years of age or older as of Jan. 1, 2012. A mixed team must contain at least one youth from each age division.
Livestock Bowl is a quiz competition where all the questions are about beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat topics and students use a buzzer in order to answer the questions. Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Each match has both an individual and toss-up question round. The winning 4-H senior team will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl competition in Omaha, NE at the AKSARBEN Livestock Exhibition.
Skillathon contest is made up of a written quiz and learning stations such as breed identification, feed identification, equipment identification as well as some team activities such as demonstrating evaluation skills. The top Senior level 4-H team will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Skillathon Contest, held each fall in Louisville.
Competition in Quiz Bowl & Skillathon encourages members to develop a more complete knowledge of animals and related subjects. This contest provides an educational program for all project members, including those who may not own a project animal, and provides a way to develop self-confidence. These programs are a great parallel to some similar programs that breed associations and other organizations conduct such as Junior Cattle Nationals, NJSA (National Junior Swine Association) and the All-American Sheep Show.

Livestock Letter for 2012 Fair (PDF)
For FDL County Fair folks, the market livestock project forms are due Sept 9, 2011 at the Extension office. Don’t trust USPS, UPS or FedEx, trust only your feet walking into the Extension office. Sent something by mail? Call Kathy 929-3171 to make sure it arrived.
In order to sell in next year’s sale, you need to submit this MLP form it can be found at:
http://fyi.uwex.edu/fdlmeat/rulesandforms/
For 4-H youth, don’t forget to reenroll soon. The MLP must also be submitted by FFA this they wish to sell at next year’s auction.
Any questions? Let me know. Irv Possin 929-3171 irvan.possin@uwex.edu .
Something new this year. A summary of feed costs on project animals is posted here:
http://fyi.uwex.edu/fdlmeat/fond-du-lac-county-fair-results/2010-fond-du-lac-county-fair-results/
These numbers have come from youth that submitted MLP forms. You can find yourself by looking at the youth id on the bottom. This is the same number from your educational credits (if you don’t know, give our office a call 929-3171). As always, we need to be careful when we compare feed costs. Those costs that are very low are likely calculated wrong. Those costs that are very high/lb of gain may have a calculation error or an animal that did not gain well due to illness. Look at the average and see where you ended up.
Are you spending too much to raise your animal? About right? Was your number way off compared to everyone else?
If you have questions, let me know.
