2011 Chippewa County Agricultural Land Rental Rate Survey Results

In December 2011, UW-Extension conducted an agricultural land rental survey in nine counties across western Wisconsin. Chippewa County UW-Extension participated and 622 surveys were sent to randomly selected landowners and farm operators based on the Chippewa County USDA Farm Service Agency mailing list.  Two-hundred nine surveys were returned for a return rate of 34%.

Results available here Land Rent Survey 2012

Operators and land owners were asked for rental rates on their largest parcels, up to four parcels total, and corn yield.  Rental rates were averaged for the county as a whole and for each Chippewa County township.  Rates were averaged as a whole and from operators and land owners individually.

Based on this survey, the average land rental rate from all operators and owners was $81/acre.  The USDA Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics Service for 2011 lists the average land rental rate at $89/acre http://www.nass.usda.gov/Statistics_by_State/Wisconsin/Publications/County_Estimates/cashrents.pdf

This information is intended to be used as a starting point for land rental rate negotiations.     Several factors influence land rental rates including but not limited to competition, soil type, access, field size, fertility, conservation practices, and slope of the land.

Value of corn silage resources

At this time each year, the question about the value of corn silage or corn standing in the field is raised.  Much of the basis of figuring the value of corn silage is on how much grain is in a ton of corn silage.  An article about the relationship between corn grain yield and forage yield is available here.

Farmer to Farmer Information

The Farmer to Farmer Corn and Forage Website is probably best thought of as an electronic neighborhood  bulletin board which allows local farmers to get in touch with one another.  The website facilitates the local marketing of feed commodities where livestock producers in need of high moisture corn, corn silage, hay, or straw can easily make contact with sellers  that have feed commodities for sale.  The site developed and supported by UW-Extension can be found at.  http://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu.

The Farmer to Farmer Corn and Forage List is free of charge for both buyers and sellers.  Users can search for, or list for sale, high moisture corn, corn grain, haylage, hay or straw.  Buyers can search for  farmers in just one Wisconsin county or in any number of counties at once.

This site is an excellent way for buyers and sellers to get in-touch locally. Neighbors often within short distances have been able to buy and sell as a result of the website.  Buyers can locate feed for their animals easily.  Sellers can find buyers and save money in grain drying and marketing costs if they choose to sell their corn crop as high moisture corn or silage.

Buyers and sellers can access the website  by going to:  http://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu.  A brouchure about the network is available here 2011 Farmer to Farmer Brochure

People who wish to use this service but do not have access to the Internet can get access and assistance at their county UW-Extension office.  For more information please contact:  Jerry Clark, Chippewa/Eau Claire County Crops and Soils Educator, 715-726-7950.
