Ryan Sterry (2011)

UW-Extension Agriculture Agent Ryan Sterry has served in two bordering, yet unique counties early in his Extension career. Ryan first served in Polk County from 2006 to 2010, and has been serving St. Croix County since August of 2010. There is great diversity in agricultural production in both counties, making it a challenge to tailor educational programming to fit all. Areas of expertise Ryan has focused on include Farm and Financial Management, Dairy Management, and Horticultural Education.

Much of Ryan’s Farm and Financial Management programming has focused on one-on-one consultation with producers to complete financial analysis for their farms. These analyses have been used for expansion planning, farm succession, beginning farmer loans, and for improving overall farm management decisions. Additionally, Ryan has worked on easy to use budgeting tools. The most popular has been a Corn Silage Pricing aid used by over 300 growers and agri-business consultants across the Mid-West. Both Polk and St. Croix Counties are under increased development pressure from the Twin Cities Metro Area, and in response Ryan has worked with producers in both counties on the development of Agricultural Enterprise Area’s and updating Farmland Preservation Plans.

Ryan’s Dairy programming has included genetics/reproduction, replacements, grazing, and nutrient management. With a background in dairy cattle reproduction Ryan took the lead in a survey of dairy producers on the use of gender biased semen. Over 340 producers responded to the survey, which was the first of its kind at the time. Results of the survey were used in several local workshops and were featured in Hoard’s Dairyman, an international dairy industry publication. Furthermore, with a growing urban population and over 300 named public waterways in both counties, nutrient management arose as an area of emphasis in Ryan’s needs assessments. As of 2011, 25 plans totaling 7,100 acres have been completed.
